The chemical nature of Cyclic Olefin Copolymers (COCs) offers very unique material properties, making them not only attractive for the manufacturing of specialized injection moulded parts but also for several thin film applications. The unique properties of COCs are e.g. their outstanding optical transparency and stability, dielectric characteristics, chemical resistance, and biocompatibility.
High-tech applications like optical thin films for sensor systems or the manufacturing of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and micro total analysis systems (μTAS) are some examples where COCs applied as thin films offer material characteristics which more generic optical polymers cannot fulfill. For such type of applications a typical polymer film thickness of around 1 micron is needed, usually applied via spin-coating techniques. One great example is the use of our COC spin-on thin film formulation mr-I T85 for the manufacturing of long-wave infrared metasurfaces, which was recently published in Optical Materials Express:
